Founded in Vancouver by Irv Davies in 1967, Mustang Survival is known officially as Mustang Sportswear Ltd. The first product was the Style-100 Navy Blue Floater Coat. In 1968, 1968 John Wayne calls Mr. Davies from Pender Island: "This is John Wayne speaking…I’ve got to get one of those {damn} jackets of yours. A buddy of mine got one here and it’s the greatest." In 1974 The Mustang Style–1600 Vest became the first Canadian Coast Guard Approved PFD coat. Beginning in 1975 to 1979 Mustang secured its first US Coast Guard Approval and the US Coast Guard began using its products.
Mustang established a US subsidiary in 1985 and opened its first US office in Bellingham. Mustang redesigned the original floater coat by developing the Must Move Technology, which allowed for greater movement when wearing the coat. In 1989 Mustang invented Buoyant Snowmobile Wear – Ice Rider by Mustang. In 1995 Mustang Survival was awarded a NASA contract to co-develop and supply inflatable life preservers for the NASA Space Shuttle Program. Mustang, in collaboration with Boeing, developed a Chemical-Biological-Cold Water Immersion Garment for the life support system of a F-22 fighter.
In 2004 Mustang launched its newest technology, the Inflatable PFD with Life-saving Inflatable Flotation Technology - L.I.F.T, which provides 80% fewer mouth immersions - greatly reducing the risk of drowning. The following year, Mustang introduced the low maintenance Inflatable PFD with HIT which won't inflate inadvertently due to rain, wash or spray. The product was recognized with the 2006 NMMA Innovation Award for Safety.
In 2007 Mustang launches its newest and most innovative product - the Rescue Stick throwable emergency rescue inflatable. The product is recognized with the 2007 NMMA Innovation Award for Safety. Today, Mustang maintains a reputation for world-class research, design, and manufacture of superior safety and protection garments - for recreational, industrial, commercial and government applications.
